When and how to update XBMC or Kodi

Not sure if I am posting this in the correct place.
I was given a OTT M8 4K Android Box for my birthday several weeks ago and it is said to be "Fully Loaded".
I have been reading this thread and I want to know when and how I should update? Most of the addons work, but sometimes movies and shows will freeze for a few seconds. This is what I see on system info.........XBMC 14.0 ALPHA 1 Git: 20140512-6a8e3b5 (Compiled: May 12 2014) for Android.
I have downloaded Kodi 14.1-Helix Armeabi-v7a.apk. Is this the next upgrade?
