CaptainK - My son's career is space related and he recently mentioned that he would like to have a nice telescope someday to share experiences with his kids. He should be getting his bump to oakleafs in 2015 and I'd like to help him with his telescope. He mentions Celestron and Meade as being good brands and that a 6" to 9" computerized model would work well and make it easy to search the sky. Can you share any experience you might have with scopes and which brand/model you'd recommend? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Celestron and Meade are great. They are a little pricey though.
I personally have an Computerized 8inch Newtonian Reflector f/3.9 with an equatorial mount. as I do alot of astrophotography.
Heres a site with lots of info and great deals. I bought my setup there for a little less than $1000. The brands you mention with cost more than that.
I have great results with my setup.
If you just want to view "space" then a refractor scope is best.
If you want to photograph "space" then a reflector is better.
    Hope I helped you out...

You get more scope for the dollar with a reflector. 6 to 8 inch is what I recommend.
Also the mount is as important as the scope. Get the best mount you can afford.

Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions. I could talk for days about this stuff. lol
