The Fifth Estate (2013) - based on true events

You can't expose the world's secrets without exposing yourself
    Julian Assange

    Director: Bill Condon
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Alicia Vikander, Carice van Houten

The film is based on the two books, both of which are critical of WikiLeaks and especially critical of Julian Assange.

Writers: Daniel Domscheit-Berg - "Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website"
David Leigh and Luke Harding - "WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy"

Assange himself stated that it is a "serious propaganda attack on WikiLeaks and the integrity of its staff, a 'lie built upon a lie'"; and described it as "fanning the flames for war on Iran", after reading an old copy of the script.

Though Assange said that the film is a "hostile work", he also claimed that Cumberbatch who plays him in the film is "personally supportive" of the organization.
Birgitta Jonsdottir, who was once a part of WikiLeaks and was consulted by the film producers stated that "the Iran scene has been written out, plus the name has been changed".
Jonsdottir also tweeted that Assange does not possess the latest version of the script.

Bill Condon, the director stated that... It may be decades before we understand the full impact of WikiLeaks and how its revolutionized the spread of information.

So this film wont claim any long view authority on its subject, or attempt any final judgment. We want to explore the complexities and challenges of transparency in the information age and, we hope, enliven and enrich the conversations WikiLeaks has already provoked.

Benedict Cumberbatch who portrays the Wikileaks founder stated that, "No matter how you cut it, he's done us a massive service, to wake us up to the zombie-like way we absorb our news".

On September 18 2013, Wikileaks released a mature version of the complete script to the public, because "the film is, from WikiLeaks' perspective, irresponsible, counterproductive and harmful." They also published a "Talking Points" memo "because it represents a frank internal appraisal of [the film] and what is wrong with it."

After the script was posted, WikiLeaks tweeted this --> WikiLeaks was never consulted about the Dreamworks/Disney film, so we've given our advice for free...... 'It's a bad film.'

    "Fiction masquerading as fact"

    -end c/p

Wikileaks exposed many lies and atrocities from all around the world.
How it worked was a whistleblower would post what he or she knows with videos or documents onto the website. These whistleblowers were protected due to the fact that they could not be traced thru their connection to Wikileaks.
Even Juliane himself could not trace their identity and is how he set it up to be just like that.

"Give a man a mask, and he will tell you the truth "
    Oscar Wilde

Some may remember videos like the US soldiers fire bombing innocent people from an attack helicopter, exposing the true facts on what went on in that war in Iraq.
The US government did not like that or other videos and documents that were posted for the public to see. They want Juliane in a US prison
Currently Juliane is being held in a UK jail with the USA fighting to have him extradited to the US

There is much controversy concerning Assange.
Is he a hero of the people or is he a guy looking for for free speech but... with no regard for the safety for those that may be directly or indirectly involved and have been exposed ?
Juliane is fighting for free speech and always has been, but at what lengths did he go ?
This movie (based on true events) does not nor could it answer that.

"The illusion of freedom will continue for as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will take down the scenery, move the tables and chairs out of the way, then they will pull back the curtains and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater."
    - Frank Zappa
