Can I use external player to watch TV on my Android box?

I'm having a problem with micro-stuttering on my Nexus player and I would like to test external players like MX or VLC to see if they would fix the issue. I tried setting up the playercorefactory.xml file. I was able to watch movies in a external player, but live TV would not even start. There would be a quick flash when I select the channel and that's it, it would go back to channel list.

Can someone share their xml settings here so I can give them a try?
