We get small earthquakes in west Alberta near or in the Mountains, a few a year. Most always they are in the Rocky Mountains or in the foothills of the Mountains. This one was in Nordegg which is in the foothills. Not many people in that area.
The quakes are usually mostly below 2 magnitude as this one was, but last year near Rocky Mountain House (a town in the foothills) was the epicenter of a plus 4 quake.
Years ago when I was drilling on the oil rigs near Nordegg, we had a quake and it shook the derrick a little, but was not much of a quake and it was hardly noticeable.

I grew up on Vancouver Island B.C. and we had small quakes almost every month, sometimes more often. Some were big enough to scare my mother thou

ooops, i was wrong. That one in Nordegg was awhile ago.
This one today was 52 kms east of Peace River and was a 5.1 magnitude
They are not positive in the magnatude yet . This happened just over an hour ago.
Peace River area is populated but mainly in the city and not so much in outlining area, but there are people there.

Peace River valley is a beautiful place and was one of the first areas in Alberta to be homesteaded way back a couple 1000 years ago or whenever Alberta was formed :)
It is located in north central Alberta near the mountains.

don't go to Ontario.
Eastern Canada is not the best place to be these days.
Alberta is the best place in Canada right now.
BC is on the west coast but don't go there either.

Saskatchewan or Alberta is my suggestion

I just saw that there are reports of people feeling that quake as far away as north Edmonton (Mornville). That's a good 6 hours away from Peace River.

BTW, I drilled oil wells in Peace River too and Mornville too :)
All over Alberta really and in BC and in Saskatchewan too.

We drilled lots of oil wells back in my day.
Never drilled on a fault line thou :)

It was the night before Christmas and all thru the rig
not a roughneck was stirring, the bit wouldn't dig.
I heard such a clatter, I ran out of the Doghouse to see what's the matter.
And looked to see St. Nic land on the Rig.

That's all I remember of that Christmas relic we use to sing on the Rigs around Christmas time, late at night while the stars were out :)
