USWNT! Alex Morgan gets 5, and Carli Lloyd is just a supersub. Biggest score and differential in World Cup history, men or women.
I watched it. They looked incredible! I'll have to admit, though, that I began to feel sorry for the Thai women around about the 7th goal.
It could have been worse. Carli missed a few kicks, and some were just straight on to the Thai GK. Alex Morgan easily had her best WWC game ever, and frankly was a bit disappointing in the previous cups and Olympics. She scored more goals than the next team winning with the best score, France. You can't back down in the group stage because goal differential means something, and Sweden could do the same against Thailand as well.

I was able to catch the end but I'm impressed by this team...still a little worried about the quality of our goalkeeper. Hope Solo would have solidify that position but too much luggage to bring her.
I only saw highlights, but the Chile GK was outstanding...the USWNT might have doubled their score, if not for her.
Yeah, the Chile goal keeper prevented what could have been a major rout.
Another thing, seven starters from the Thailand match did not start against Chile.

Germany looks very strong against South Africa 4-0, a very structure German attack inline with traditional Germany game plan.
Congrats to Spain, who gets to play the winner of Group F.
Good chance that will be the US, too. The USWNT squeaked by Spain 1-0 in January, so Spain will once again present a formidable challenge.
No one really gets a break in the knockout round, but it seems strange that the winner of groups E and F has to play a 2nd place team, the other winners get 3rd place teams. It must be the draw, as you would think that FIFA would seed the highest ranked team to play one of those 3rd placers, but the group round is basically a tune up for the USWMT. It looks likely that the US team will play France in the quarters, and the winner of that may get England or Brazil or Japan in the semis.
The loser of the SWE-USA game gets Canada or Netherlands, then probably Germany. That is harder than Spain, then France.

USWNT looks for revenge against Sweden
The United States women's national team returns to the field against Sweden on Thursday (3 p.m. ET, FOX) in their final World Cup group stage match.
The USWNT have steamrolled the opposition to date — in two games, they’ve scored 16 goals and allowed none. Both Sweden and the United States have won their first two games and already are through to the knockout stage. Team USA can clinch the top spot in the group with a win or a draw.
The Swedes will be the USWNT’s toughest test so far. There's also animosity between the two squads because of a controversial game at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where the Swedes beat the reigning World Cup champs in the quarterfinals on penalty kicks. This game will provide insight into how the Americans will fare against the tournament’s top teams.
And we're not without some controversy. From FTW:
The idea of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is great. When it comes to the most competitive and high-stakes moments in soccer, FIFA should use the available technology to correct missed calls.
As simple as that sounds, FIFA has found a way to monumentally screw that up. And because of that, Scotland's run at the Women's World Cup is done in the group stages.
During Wednesday's Group D match against Argentina, Scotland went up by three goals before Argentina came storming back within a goal. Argentina had a chance to tie the match with a penalty in stoppage time, but a clutch save from Scotland goalkeeper Lee Alexander appeared to put an end to that scare.
Then, VAR stepped in and ruined it all.
After a VAR review, it was determined that Alexander came off her line early by maybe six inches. She was given a yellow card, and Argentina's Florencia Bonsegundo had another shot at the penalty.
This time, she converted to draw level at 3-3.
That score would hold, which put Scotland from a potential advancing third-place position to last place in the group (and eliminated).
This particular application of VAR has been THE controversy of the Women's World Cup. The rule was applied with little notice, giving goalkeepers who have trained a certain way their entire lives no time to adjust. It takes thousands of reps for muscle memory to take effect under pressure, so it was unfair of FIFA to expect an adjustment to happen for this World Cup.
France beat Nigeria this week by the same dumb ruling.
Plus, it goes against the very spirit of VAR. The system should be used to fix obvious, game-changing errors. If you have to slow down a replay and zoom in to see that a goalkeeper left her line by a few inches, that's using technology to hurt the game - not help it.
Baseball deals with the same issue when it comes to players leaving the bag while tagged for a millisecond. Is it a correct call by the rule? I guess, technically. Is it dumb and the wrong use of replay? YES.

VAR is killing the goal keepers on the penalties. As long as the shooter in on frame, it should be automatic.
NED lucked on out the VAR review on the ref's penalty call, putting the spot outside the box.
NED-CAN tied at 62'. Christine Sinclair just 2 away from Abby Wambach international goal record.
NED just scored at 74', probably will win the group over CAN unless Canada scores 2.
Canada plays the runner up between USA-SWE. That will be a pretty even match, who ever it is, then you probably will play GER.

I like this next round, more quality games for sure. France-Brasil should be very entertaining.

For sure, the quality of the UEFA teams is higher. Brazil, China and Japan have stepped back a little. Italy was the only group winner to lose a game, and that was to Brazil.
My prediction for the final 4... USA-ENG, GER-NED
Germany wins easily, but the second game went to penalties. Norway wins over the Matildas, who had to play most of the extra time one down and only made 1 penalty kick. Sam Kerr did not have a good game, including a pure miss during her penalty kick, leaves the tournament tied with Alex Morgan for the Golden Boot.
Norway will be good match with England, if they win their match.

I didn't get to see either of the matches today. From the highlights, Germany continues to be impressive. I'm looking to tomorrow's matches: Cameroon / England and France / Brazil.

FIFA confirms a foul by the French on that 'goal'. Renard towers over the Brazilian players... and fouls. The winner of this game will be very sore.
Even at the half nilnil. France could be very nervous if it gets deep into the half with no scores.

Its a final. 2-1 France. Good match, and the French captain wins it for them. If they win the WWC, they will have the toughest route of all those in that bracket...if they can beat the USWNT.

You're right! The USWNT needs to score when the opportunities present themselves. Spain is too strong to squander those opportunities.

Not good but not terrible game for the USWNT. The penalty was real close, but correctly called. That first mistake was really bad. I think they were looking ahead. They should have brought in the subs earlier. They have stuff to work on, good to have this type of game, not against Germany or France.
Congrats to 'em! It wasn't pretty but at least they move on.

Is Jill Ellis too cautious or is she too adventurous?

PARIS - Jill Ellis is too cautious. The U.S. Women's coach didn't go to her deep bench early enough in a tense 2-1 World Cup victory over fearless Spain on Monday, ignoring the damage of the stifling heat and the persistent physicality of a team that had nothing to lose against the defending champion Americans.
Ellis should have unleashed big-game scorer Carli Lloyd sooner than the 85th minute of a game that would be extended seven minutes by injury time. And can anyone figure out why Ellis didn't take advantage of Lindsey Horan's commanding presence and put Horan in the starting 11, instead of bringing her into the game in the 89th minute?
Jill Ellis is too adventurous. She experimented with different formations during the runup to the World Cup and developed a pattern of moving players out of position. Some of those moves involved shifting Julie Ertz from center back - the position Ertz plays for her club team - to midfield, turning Kelley O'Hara from an attacking player into a defender, and deploying speedy Crystal Dunn as a defender instead of as an attacking player. Ellis says moving players around helps prepare them for disruptions of suspensions and injuries. That makes sense. Still, why mess with players' comfort zones and instincts?
The truth about Ellis' coaching style lies between those extremes. The key point is that she has endured, reinventing the team's tactics after a shocking 2016 Olympic quarterfinal loss that is a line of demarcation between eras, as well as surviving a player revolt that Sports Illustrated reported arose in 2017 over her tactics and faulty communication skills.
Almost forgotten in the social media roasting she endured after the drama of Megan Rapinoe's two penalty-kick goals and the team's narrow escape against Spain on Monday was that Ellis tied April Heinrichs' program record by coaching in her 124th game. Ellis, the only woman to coach the U.S. to a World Cup championship - Anson Dorrance was the coach in 1991 and Tony DiCicco in 1999 - was paid $291,029 in fiscal year 2018, according to information on U.S. Soccer's website. That's about $3 million less than Jurgen Klinsmann was paid to not coach the U.S. men's team, which lost in the round of 16 in the 2014 World Cup. Ellis can become the first person to coach a men's or women's squad to two World Cup titles since Vittorio Pozzo led the Italian men to wins in 1934 and 1938. She will break the program record Friday, when the U.S. women face dangerous France at Parc des Princes in Paris.
"This is the game. You want this game," Ellis said Monday. "It's going to be exciting."
Ellis has never lost a World Cup game, but Friday's matchup will be her toughest test. Spain was an example of how quickly some opponents are catching up to the U.S. women. France is capable of pulling even or winning if the Americans aren't at their best.
To reach this point Ellis prepared carefully and with a long-term view in mind. She insisted the U.S. play Spain and France in friendly matches in Europe early this year so players could become familiar with the opponents, atmosphere and tactics they'd face here. She scheduled games every three days, again to simulate World Cup conditions. That's paying off by establishing a rhythm for a team that has gotten less rest than some other quarterfinalists.
As for her tinkering with the lineup, players have said they understand her motivation. "This team is extremely deep. Whoever Jill decides to put on the field, she feels confident that they're going to get the job done and I can tell you that every other player feels confident that whoever she puts on the field is the right combination of players to win the game," O'Hara said last week. "And I think that's what the coaching staff has tried to build us toward, for this tournament, so we can be extremely versatile, extremely dangerous, but also just a solid team defensively."
Reserve defender Ali Krieger said the mixing and matching on defense hasn't been a problem. "I think it's just all about communication and understanding each other's roles and relationships on the field," she said. "We've had a lot of time together and I think we're very interchangeable. It takes a lot of connectedness and communication back there and you could see that ... . All the defenders here are very, very willing to get better every day and look at the little details we need to fix and then apply it to the game."
Ellis explained she didn't start Horan on Monday because Horan had gotten a yellow card in the second group game, and Ellis didn't want to risk losing the player for a game if she got another yellow card. The timing of bringing Horan off the bench was dictated by the flow.
"You can't just live cautiously, I think, when you're in a knockout game. I think you have to coach in the moment and make those decisions," Ellis said. "It felt that we started to gain momentum, and I think as a coach you have to read that moment."
Ellis also said she doesn't consider the starting lineup to be fixed or sacred. "I think people get hung up on starters and 11s and that number kind of rings through a lot of media's heads," she said, "but when I look as a coach, I look at 14, 15 starters and that's the beauty of having such a deep roster."
It's Ellis' job to bring to Friday's match the right mix of caution, boldness and pure gut instinct to guide this team toward another World Cup championship. Anything less will be considered a failure.

The car had a simultaneous battery/alternator issue this week, and my car shop could get in early (6am) to install the alternator. I drained my phone while trying to get UBER and LYFT on the phone, but I ended up just waiting and was out in an hour and a half.
Nice side bicycle by the Germans, and the Swedes matched on a great breakaway pass. I think this one may get one more set of matching scores and it will go to penalties.

Just England, not the Scottish, Welch, or Northern Ireland, who have their own teams. The English manager is mad because a couple of operational staff from the US team made a visit to the hotel that the team was practicing at. The reason they visited was perhaps logistical to prepare for using the hotel for the final (lol), but basically the guy is accusing the USA of spying.
Today is the showdown at 3:00 PM ET. Hopefully, the latest brush up will motivate the USWNT. The English team looked phenomenol in their last game. This should be a great match to watch.

Norway places third in the tournament, beating England 1-0. Congrats to Norway. To be honest, I thought England would win this match handily. Neville, England's coach, sounds pretty bitter about everything, including this loss. I think he is still trying to cope with the loss to the USWNT.
It was 2-1, but it looks like Sweden just surprised England. Ellen White had some chances to even it up, but one was a hand ball. I'm glad that Aslani wasn't that badly hurt, maybe she got a stinger in the last match.
