From CBS Sports :
https://www.cbssports.com/general/news/2018-food-city-500-odds-picks-model-says-ryan-blaney-surprises-in-nascar-at-bristol/

"One driver the model absolutely loves for NASCAR at Bristol: Ryan Blaney, who is going off at 18-1.

Blaney has been a breakthrough driver on the Monster Energy Cup Series this year with five top-10 and three top-five finishes in seven events.

He turned the corner at Bristol in the fall race in 2017, recording his first career top-10 finish on this steeply banked, half-mile short track. He's a target for anybody looking for a big NASCAR at Bristol payday.

Another curveball: Chase Elliott, whom Vegas considers a top contender on Sunday, doesn't sniff the top 10.

Elliott has struggled to contend this year, recording just one top-five finish in seven races. He has had some success in his young career at Bristol with a pair of top-10 finishes in four races, but Elliott isn't worth the 12-1 odds this week in a loaded field.

Also, a driver getting even longer odds than Blaney is primed to make a serious run at the checkered flag. Anybody who bets on this long shot could hit it big."...!

Can You say "Restrictor-Plates"...?!?

"Keselowski has six restrictor-plate victories, including five at Talladega. Hamlin has two, including winning the closest-ever Daytona 500 finish two years ago. Both have shown a sophistication in racing through the draft and running up front in recent years, which is underscored by their showing during Speedweeks so far.

“I look at Brad (Keselowski) and Denny (Hamlin) as being the top two guys,” Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch explained earlier this week. “I think the speed of (Ricky) Stenhouse’s car was pretty important last year. He did a good job with it, won some races. But I got to look at Brad and Denny, the things they do, as the guys you kind of watch, see if you can mimic, emulate some of the stuff they have going on in order to get yourself through the pack and up toward the front.”

Timothy Peters driving for Ricky Benton in Talladega Cup race
Apr 19, 2018

UPDATE: Cerro Gordo, N.C. (April 19, 2018) - The last time Timothy Peters partnered with Ricky Benton Racing (RBR), the pairing resulted in a seventh-place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) at the half-mile Martinsville Speedway. Emboldened by the result, the team and driver have decided to renew their partnership in a bigger way: RBR and Peters will be heading to Alabama to compete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

The event will be Peters' debut in MENCS and RBR's second start. RBR finished 14th in the 60th running of the Daytona 500 in February.
Advance Auto Parts will sponsor Ricky Benton Racing and Timothy Peters at Talladega in April. Ricky Benton Racing

"This is just a dream come true for me," said Peters. "I am humbled and so appreciative for the opportunity that Ricky (Benton), Advance Auto Parts, the entire Black's Tire family, BB&T and Highland Construction have given me to make my first Cup start."

Despite not having made a Cup start to date, Peters is no stranger to NASCAR restrictor plate racing. The Danville, Va. native has two wins at Talladega and one at Daytona to go along with four other top-five finishes in 14 starts in the NCWTS. He also has a sixth-place finish in ARCA competition at Daytona.

"Timothy is an incredibly talented driver and proved to be a great fit with our guys at Martinsville," said team owner Ricky Benton. "He and (crew chief) Mike (Hester) worked great together, communicated well and made some great adjustments as that race progressed.

"I have no doubt that it will carry over to Talladega in the Cup car."

Benton said David Gilliland, who drove the RBR entry in the Daytona 500, is not behind the wheel this time around due to commitments to the race team he owns fielding cars in ARCA, the K&N Pro Series and NCWTS.

Motor Speedway to deliver unprecedented Coca-Cola 600 pre-race military spectacular
Apr 19, 2018

CONCORD, N.C. (April 18, 2018) - Charlotte Motor Speedway will incorporate all five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces in an unprecedented, spectacular pre-race Salute to the Troops before the 59th running of the Coca-Cola 600 on May 27.

This year's edition of the Memorial Day weekend celebration will highlight the Department of Defense's "This is Your Military" initiative by paying tribute to each of the military branches, featuring special guests and showcasing vehicles and awe-inspiring displays of military prowess from the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Coast Guard. Fans and drivers will also get to #KnowYourMil through interactions with service members.

On race day, fans will be treated to aerial thrills and ground-shaking firepower as F-15 fighter jets and Blackhawk helicopters with a rappel team join Howitzers and Humvees in touring the iconic 1.5-mile superspeedway before NASCAR's biggest stars take the green flag.

"Charlotte Motor Speedway has a proud history of saluting our great nation's armed forces, but this year's pre-race show will be the biggest, most incredible one we've ever had," said Greg Walter, the executive vice president of Charlotte Motor Speedway. "We're thankful that so many of our local service members join us each year at America's Home for Racing to witness the awesome display of patriotism and racing excitement. Like the giant American flag we'll have at the race, I can't wait to see it unfold."

In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Defense, Charlotte Motor Speedway is executing "Mission 600," a series of visits by NASCAR drivers to regional military bases as a prelude to the Memorial Day weekend Salute to the Troops at the Coca-Cola 600. Among the drivers tentatively scheduled to appear are Brad Keselowski, the driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion, at Naval Station Norfolk on April 19. Austin Dillon and the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 pit crew will visit Fort Bragg on April 26, and Alex Bowman and the No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 pit crew will visit U.S. Coast Guard Station Wrightsville Beach on May 3. Darrell "Bubba" Wallace, the driver of the No. 43 U.S. Air Force Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, will head to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base on May 9. An additional visit to Marine Corps Base Camp LeJeune is in the planning stages.
Drivers will learn about the inner workings of daily life in the U.S. Armed Forces through military training, exercises, facility tours and meetings with the men and women who bravely serve.

In addition to thousands of troops joining fans in the race-day festivities, ticketholders to the Coca-Cola 600 can enjoy a FREE pre-race concert featuring the Grammy-nominated country music superstars Eli Young Band.

NASCAR changes restrictor plates to slow cars at Talladega
Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images for NASCAR
By Dustin LongApr 27, 2018, 5:46 PM EDT

TALLADEGA, Ala. — NASCAR announced Friday that teams will use restrictor plates with smaller holes to slow the cars after Jamie McMurray’s car went airborne in a crash during the final practice session.

McMurray was uninjured.

NASCAR will give teams restrictor plates with holes 1/64 of an inch smaller than the ones used Friday. The new restrictor-plate size will be 55/64 of an inch.

The change is expected to cut about 10-15 horsepower and is likely to slow the cars by about 2 mph.

McMurray topped practice before his incident with a lap of 203.975 mph.

Last fall, the top lap in either Cup practice at Talladega was 197.859 mph.

“I think this year it seems as though the cars are quite a bit different than they have been in my history here,” said Brad Keselowski, a five-time Talladega winner, before the plate change was announced. “They are a lot faster and handling quite a bit worse.

“With the cars handling the way they are handling, you will need to single-file out to survive this race. I think that is probably not the expectation of what we want to put on for a show.”

NASCAR stated it made the change for safety reasons to decrease the chance of a car lifting off. McMurray had a left rear tire go down and turned his car sideways down the backstretch. The right side of the car was slightly off the ground when McMurray’s car was struck by Ryan Newman‘s car, sending McMurray’s car into a series of rolls.

The reason that speeds are up this year is that NASCAR no long has a ride height rule. That means teams can lower the cars so they are not in the air as much. That creates faster speeds.

Cup teams qualify Saturday and race Sunday. There are no practices scheduled.

That speed and Talladega go hand ni hand.. the banks are the steepest of any track @ 33 degrees.
That's 5 stories tall to get to the top.

Maybe Nascar Officials will get around to telling Drivers and Owners that Their Cars will have to have "Governors" on Them in a year or two...!

"Today, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz limit their production cars to 250 kilometres per hour (155 mph). Certain Quattro GmbH and AMG cars, and the Mercedes/McLaren SLR is an exception. The BMW Rolls-Royces are limited to 240 kilometres per hour (149 mph). Jaguars, although British, also have a limiter, as do the Swedish Saab and Volvo on cars where it is necessary."...!

04-28-2018, 07:49 PM
"Governors" won't really work in a racing application.
They as designed to take control of an engine and how it performs. That would not bode well with a race driver :(
The restrictor plates do nothing to the driver's control over the engine, they just restrict the amount of air flow, which in turn reduces horse power.

"Hylton is not a household name for modern-era stock car racing fans. He was not a champion or a winner of dozens of races. He won twice — both considered upsets — at Richmond, Va., in 1970 and, ironically, at Talladega in 1972. He was NASCAR’s Cup Rookie of the Year in 1966.

Hylton is best remembered as a driver who raced against the wind. He had sponsorship at different levels through a long career of driving and team ownership, but the badge he carried was as an independent, a determined sort who raced with considerably fewer resources than most of his competition. His shop in Inman, S.C. had an eclectic collection of parts, pieces and racing memorabilia." ...!

Not the White Cliffs :

Dover has been on the calendar every year since 1969 and twice a year since 1971. In that time, a lot of the sport’s best have picked up wins, but Jimmie Johnson stands alone at the top of the charts with 11 career wins at Dover. It is as straightforward of a track as they come, with one mile in lengths and four turns that have 24-degree banking. Interestingly enough, the fall race speeds are a lot higher than the spring race speeds, which adds anywhere from 25 to 30 minutes to the actual race time. Does that matter? Not really, but it’s a fun fact and a good segue into the odds for this week.

Kyle Larson scored his first Cup pole of the season Friday at Dover International Speedway and the fifth of his career.

Larson led the way with a lap of 158.103 mph.

Kevin Harvick (157.494 mph) will start second and is followed by Martin Truex Jr. (157.432), Kyle Busch (157.226) and Ricky Stenhouse Jr (157.006).

This is Larson’s first pole since last June at Sonoma Raceway. This is Chevrolet’s first pole since the Daytona 500.

Jimmie Johnson, the defending winner of this event, failed to make the final round. He’ll start 19th. Joey Logano, who won last weekend at Talladega, qualified 18th. Trevor Bayne, who will have Matt Kenseth in his car next weekend at Kansas Speedway, qualified 22nd.

Kasey Kahne had the identical time as Ryan Newman in the first round but Newman got the final spot to advance because he is higher in points. Kahne will start 25th. Darrell Wallace Jr. qualified 26th, and Daytona 500 winner Austin Dillon will start 27th."

Apr 27, 2018

Jayski.com Staff

Russ Truelove, 93, who was known for his terrifying rollover crash during a NASCAR race on the Daytona Beach & Road Course, died in his Waterbury, Connecticut, home surrounded by family Wednesday night.

Truelove raced throughout the 1950s in various motorsports series. He made 13 starts in what is now known as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. He had five top-10 finishes.

He made three Daytona starts in NASCAR races on the beach, with his best finish of 27th coming in 1955.

The following year, after qualifying fifth, he rolled his No. 226 Mercury six times in the notorious North Turn, where the 4.1-mile course transitioned from the beach to the A1A asphalt.

The rollover sequence was captured and published by Life magazine later that year."

A.J. Allmendinger won stage 3 (10 lap shootout)

Chase Elliott along with Aric Almirola, Erik Jones and Paul Menard (till he hit the wall) were contenders to get a stage win, but just could not pull it off.
These guys were driving for all they were worth too :)

Chase Elliott joined the All-Star race regardless though , he was Fan Favorite voted in and this is 3 years in a row he gets this nod
Elliott did pretty well in the big race as did Suarez... but Harvick proved again why his nickname is 'Happy'... because when he looks in his rear view mirror, he is a very very happy guy :)
One Million Bux happier !!

A wreck near the end which took out a few cars, claimed Truex Jr and Kurt Busch and some others.. Kyle B was involved but was able to continue the race. Kurt had ht the wall earlier, but did not sustain much damage that first time.
Jimmie Johnson was fast the entire race but just could not get up front :(

Carl Edwards will try for his second straight win at this year’s Coca-Cola 600 on May 27th, 2018 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. Considering his success at this year’s race last year, Edwards could be among the favorites in NASCAR odds.

How to bet on Nascar Coca-Cola 600

The odds of a driver to win the Coca-Cola 600 will generally look something like:

Jeff Gordon + 200
Mark Martin + 250
Jeff Burton + 300
Bill Elliott + 700
Robby Gordon + 700
Field + 500

These betting odds will be lower when betting on a driver to finish in the top three, as the sportsbook must pay off three different winning bets.

A player would have to bet $10 to win $20 that Jeff Gordon will win the Coca-Cola 600, while the bettor wagering on Bill Elliott stands to win $70 on their $10 wager.

Another commonly placed bet in NASCAR is head-to-head finish between two drivers. With this bet, a player doesn't really care what place the driver finishes in, as long as the driver finishes higher than the other driver.

A head-to-head betting line for the Coca-Cola 600 will look something like:

Mark Martin - 130 Jeff Burton + 110

In this bet, players wagering on Martin to finish higher than Burton will be asked to risk $13 to win $10, while bettors believing that Burton will finish higher than Martin will bet $10 to win $11.

Those familiar with sports betting will have no trouble making the transition to NASCAR wagering, while those new to the world of sports betting should be able to pick up the concepts of NASCAR betting without too much hassle.

"Kyle Busch has now won a points paying race on every current NASCAR circuit after a dominant victory in the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte.

The #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota led at the end of each of the four stages, beating Martin Truex Jnr home by 3.823s while Denny Hamlin made for an all-Toyota top three.

Kyle Busch qualified on pole but it was Joey Logano (#22 Team Penske Ford) who took the initial lead.

That lasted only until Lap 5, when Kyle Busch got back in front and but for pit stops was not headed for the rest of the race.

He led all but 23 of the 400 laps to notch up a fourth win of the season, move ahead of Kevin Harvick on 25 play-off points, and extend his series lead."...!

For NH Sunday :

"Favorites

Kyle Busch
Currently seated atop the Monster Energy Cup with 799 points, Busch will head to this weekend’s raise in New Hampshire riding a rolling wave of momentum. He placed fourth last week in Kentucky and has finished inside the top five in four of his last five races, which includes a win in Chicago earlier this month. Projected to enter the playoffs as the top overall seed, Busch will look to add more points to his total at intermediate track in New Hampshire, where he won last September during the The ISM Connect 300. Busch has two wins and eight top fives in 14 races on intermediate tracks since 2016.

Martin Truex Jr.
Truex is coming off a win in Kentucky last week to boost his win total to four. He also cut down Kevin Harvick’s lead in the second spot down to two playoff points, and a strong performance this weekend in New Hampshire could pull himself closer to the top of the standings. Truex has not won in New Hampshire, but since 2016, he has placed twice in the top five and thrice in the top 10. The Furniture Row Racing driver has been scorching hot like a burning tire rubber of late, having won twice and finished four times in his last four races.

Jimmie Johnson
Johnson has not won a race so far in the series, but it’s going to be hard to ignore his chances of winning his first this weekend. Johnson likes race on intermediate tracks, as evidenced by the fact that he has 18 wins in 95 races on such type of courses. He also has a 9.92 average finish on intermediate tracks.

Sleeper Pick
Aric Almirola

Almirola helped his playoff chances with a top 10 finish in Kentucky last week, placing a respectable eighth overall. It was his third top 11 finish over his past four races, so he’s building up some momentum. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver raced four times in New Hampshire since 2016, and placed inside the top 20 only twice. So far in his career, he has recorded only one top five performance there.

Long Shot Pick
Ty Dillon

In 19 starts in the series, Dillon has only finished inside the top 20 just five times. Mediocrity defines Dillon’s campaign so far, which is also why you’re reading his name under the long shot category. He has five top 20 finishes in 10 races on intermediate tracks dating back to February of 2016.

Writer’s Prediction
Martin Truex Jr. gets the win."...!

"Kurt Busch turned the first lap in the final session of qualifying and watched as nobody was able to post a faster lap in the five-minute-session to capture his first pole position at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. At a track where his brother Kyle Busch has dominated on qualifying day, today belongs to Kurt, who stood with the Cape Cod Café Pizza Pole Award.

"I like the way we made the right changes through each of the rounds and we stuck to a game plan," said Kurt. "That's exactly what you hope to happen each time you go to qualifying where you don't have to deviate away from the plan you set in place."

Kurt turned his best lap of the session's final round with a speed of 133.591 mph for the pole. He was fourth fastest in the first round as he posted a lap of 132.817, and then was sixth in the second round with a 133.221 lap to advance to the final round.

The final results set up a great Sunday duel between the Busch brothers. Kyle steered his no. 18 M&Ms Toyota to the fastest overall lap of 133.656 mph, which was tops in the second qualifying round. Add to the drama that Martin Truex Jr. qualified second after capturing the 2017 pole at NHMS, and you have a trio of titans ready to lead the field for the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301.

In celebrating his first New Hampshire pole award, Kurt praised the addition of traction compound to the turns of "The Magic Mile." He predicts the extra stick will mean even more competitive racing this weekend. "It will help big time," explained Kurt. "When your car is working good you can pass with the VHT in lane 1 and lane 3; it changes the game."

This is the third pole victory of 2018 for the driver of the no. 41 Monster Energy Ford, but he is still searching for his first trip to Victory Lane this season. He's confident this is a step towards that goal. "It's great to be on pole," said Kurt. "It's exactly what we needed to start that second half vibe going on."

The drafting package used during the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race weekend continues to be a discussion point for NASCAR competition officials, tracks, teams, manufacturers and engine builders. The conversation now, though, is centered on how to potentially implement elements of it in 2019 at the earliest.

The rules package used at the All-Star Race that included aero ducts, a higher spoiler, plates and an older splitter, will not be used in the Monster Energy Series again in 2018.

Little Tidbit :

"How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. One hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Watkins Glen(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Watkins Glen(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph."...!

Definitely Food for Thought :

"There have been eight different winners in the last eight Watkins Glen races. And there are only six active former winners in this weekend's field - defending winner Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, A.J. Allmendinger, Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin.

Clearly, however, Truex has been the most recent road course ace and is seeking his third consecutive victory this week. He's the defending winner at The Glen and won at Sonoma earlier this year. He has also led the most laps in the last three road course events - including a rare dominating performance (62 laps) for his Sonoma victory earlier this summer. He has finished every single lap in 12 starts at Watkins Glen.

"I raced go karts on road courses and always had fun learning the challenges of road racing," Truex said. "I can remember the first time I raced at Watkins Glen. It was in a Busch North Series car. It took a while to figure out the track - it was crazy. I kept asking myself 'How are these guys going so fast around here?'

"I have a lot of years of experience racing at The Glen. And right now I am with a great team which gives me all the pieces to be able to win races at different tracks. Hopefully we can go to The Glen this weekend and do it again. We know that a good qualifying spot is key. Starting up front sets the tone for the race."

Only twice in the last 14 races has the winner started from farther back than seventh position. Kyle Busch is the last to win the race from the pole position (2008).

Truex's No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota team may feel a little championship "tag-you're-it" as the other two members of the dominant "Big 3" group - Harvick and Busch - have won the preceding two races coming to Watkins Glen. The mighty threesome has won nine of the last 10 races and all three have hoisted a victory at The Glen before."...!

Rain again?

Early alerts show a 30% chance of rain on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway. It is very early in the week to get a real accurate reading, but the threat of rain as of Monday is imminent. We saw rain tires used for a short period of time in Saturday’s Zippo 200 at The Glen, the Xfinity Series race, but chances are pretty good that we won’t be seeing them this weekend at Michigan.

One driver I am sure would like to see rain tires used more often is A.J. Allmendinger. Allmendinger was flying in the Zippo 200 at The Glen in the rain tires. Sorry, though, “Dinger”; you won’t be using them this weekend, unfortunately.

Behind the Scenes and Not well known :

NASCAR CEO and Chairman Brian France will take an indefinite leave of absence after he was arrested Sunday evening on charges of driving under the influence.

Bob Pockrass of ESPN shared word of the leave of absence, adding Jim France will serve as interim chairman and CEO.

TMZ reported France's blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit at the time of the arrest. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that France attempted to use his relationship with President Donald Trump during the stop.

France endorsed Trump during his presidential candidacy in 2016.

A statement released by the Sag Harbor Village (N.Y.) Police Department said France was also in possession of oxycodone.

"Mr. France was observed operating a 2017 Lexus northbound on Main Street failing to stop at a duly posted stop sign," the release said, per Pockrass. "Upon traffic stop, it was determined that Mr. France was operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition.

"Upon search of his person, due to a lawful arrest, Mr. France was in possession of oxycodone pills."

France was held overnight before being arraigned Monday morning and released.

NASCAR has not released a statement on the matter at this time.

Six teams will be docked practice time in Saturday’s first practice session, and one team will lose time in the final practice session at Michigan International Speedway, NASCAR announced.

Martin Truex Jr. will lose 15 minutes of practice in the first session for being late to pre-race inspection last weekend at Watkins Glen.

Kyle Busch, Daniel Suarez and Ryan Newman each will lose 15 minutes in the first practice Saturday because they didn’t come to a complete stop in the inner loop during last weekend’s practice at Watkins Glen.

Bubba Wallace and BJ McLeod will miss 15 minutes in the first practice Saturday because their cars were late to pre-qualifying inspection Friday at Michigan.

First Cup practice Saturday is from 8:35 – 9:25 a.m. ET on CNBC.

Michael McDowell will be docked 15 minutes of the final practice Saturday because his car failed pre-qualifying inspection twice Friday at Michigan.

Final Cup practice Saturday is from 11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports App and online.

Share:

DARLINGTON, SOUTH CAROLINA (August 28, 2018) – In another once-in-a-lifetime moment fans will not want to miss, Darlington Raceway and Chevrolet are partnering to have all six generations of the manufacturers legendary Camaro pace the field prior to the green flag for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 race on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Seven different Camaros will take to the high banks of the track Too Tough To Tame driven by the following NASCAR Hall of Famers and legends of the sport:

1969 Camaro (First Gen) – driven by owner Rick Hendrick

1969 Camaro (First Gen) – driven by owner Richard Childress

1981 Camaro (Second Gen) – driven by Jeff Burton and owned by Mark Jones of Wallace, NC

1986 Camaro (Third Gen) – driven by Ray Evernham and owned by Tyler Grube of Darlington, SC

1993 Camaro (Fourth Gen) – driven by Ricky Craven and owned by Jim Ramsey of Darlington, SC

2011 Camaro (Fifth Gen) – driven by Ron Hornaday Jr. and owned by Josh Schmidt of Charlotte, NC

2017 Camaro (Sixth Gen) – driven by Ward Burton and owned by Paul Weatherford of Florence, SC

“We’re excited to have Chevrolet as a partner on this initiative celebrating the history of the Camaro for our ‘7 Decades of NASCAR’ throwback weekend,” track President Kerry Tharp said. “To see all these legendary names of our sport driving one of the most iconic brands in the Chevy family will be a sight to see.”

Chevrolet introduced the Camaro ZL1 to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this season with much fanfare, highlighted by Austin Dillon’s Daytona 500 victory for Richard Childress Racing in February and Chase Elliott’s first career Cup Series win at Watkins Glen for Hendrick Motorsports.

“Chevrolet has always valued our partnership with the historic Darlington Raceway. This year we will celebrate our mutual history and heritage in racing by participating in a unique way during the throwback weekend,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet US Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “Camaro is an iconic brand and what better way to start the Southern 500, one of NASCAR’s most celebrated events than by pacing the field with six generations of Camaros driven by several NASCAR legends and Hall of Famers.”

The cars will pace the field just prior to the green flag for the Bojangles’ Southern 500, which is slated to start at 6 p.m. Sunday night (Sept. 2) live on NBCSN and MRN.

Darlington Raceway’s award-winning throwback campaign is The Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500® on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018 at 6 p.m. on NBCSN. The NASCAR XFINITY Series Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200 will race on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. on NBC. Tickets are on sale now by calling 866-459-7223 or visiting DarlingtonRaceway.com.

This Weekend at Indy :

The NASCAR race has been a great indicator of who is going to win the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series title with a number of the winners going on to take the championship.

Every driver dreams of winning at Indy for the glory and the bragging rights the win carries.

Last year, Kasey Kahne got the better of Brad Keselowski on a second overtime restart, then pulled away to win his first Monster Energy Cup Series race since 2014, snapping a 102-race winless streak.

Jeff Gordon has won this race five times, while Jimmie Johnson has four wins. The name of the winning driver is put on the PPG Trophy which is kept at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart and Dale Jarrett have two wins.

Hendrick Motorsports has nine wins in this race, while Joe Gibbs Racing has five wins. Richard Childress Racing has won this race three times, while Robert Yates Racing has two wins.

It has been all most all Chevrolet in manufacturer wins in this race as they have 16, while Ford is next with three and Toyota has two.

Nascar Brickyard 400 Fun Facts

Nicknamed "The Brickyard," because the surface of the 2 1/2-mile oval track consisted of 3.2 million bricks in the past. A single strip of bricks, called the "yard of bricks," remains at the track's start/finish line.

NASCAR borrowed the nickname for its four hundred mile race in Indianapolis and the race quickly became a highlight on the NASCAR schedule for many fans of the sport

Behind the Daytona 500, the annual Allstate 400 at the Brickyard is arguably the second-most coveted checkered flag on the NASCAR circuit. Jimmie Johnson has left his mark on the race with three wins over the last four years and Tony Stewart has also picked up two wins at Indy.

The Brickyard 400 has been a great indicator of who is going to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup title as half of the 16 winners have gone on to take the championship. Past winners include Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Ricky Rudd and Tony Stewart, and the winners take part in the tradition of kissing the bricks at the start/finish line every year.

And relatively narrow too. Hard race to predict, but the big 3 will probably be ok, again, and again, and again. It's also the last win-and-in chance for those below the line.

Possible to clinch:
— Jimmie Johnson: If there is a new winner outside the 16-driver playoff grid, Johnson would guarantee a clinch with 37 points. If there is a repeat winner (or a win by Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, Aric Almirola or Alex Bowman), Johnson would clinch on points, regardless of finish.

Possible to clinch:
— Alex Bowman: If there is a repeat winner (or a win by Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, Aric Almirola or Jimmie Johnson), Bowman would clinch on points, regardless of finish. Bowman could clinch on points with a new winner outside the current 16-driver playoff grid and help (would need to out-point Johnson by 20 points at Indy; if Bowman gets a Top 6 finish, he would need to out-point Johnson by 19 points).

— The following drivers can only clinch a playoff spot with a win: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Ryan Newman, Paul Menard, Daniel Suarez, Jamie McMurray, William Byron, Chris Buescher, AJ Allmendinger, David Ragan, Michael McDowell, Kasey Kahne, Darrell Wallace Jr., Ty Dillon and Matt DiBenedetto.

Clinching for Regular Season Championship:
Kyle Busch can guarantee a clinch of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Championship on his own with 22 points.

How NASCAR driver points are awarded per race
By
Staff Report NASCAR.com February 8, 2017 at 3:02 pm

Under the charter system that was established in 2016, NASCAR’s premier series events can have up to 40 cars in the field. Each finishing spot in the field earns a driver points, from a maximum of 40 points to the driver who finishes first, down to one point for the driver who finishes 40th. These points accrue over a season and determine the driver standings, as well as the owner standings.

The addition of three stages to every points-paying race adds a new element. Drivers can earn race points through their performances in Stage 1 and Stage 2. Drivers who are running first through 10th at the conclusion of Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 will receive points, starting with 10 points for first place, nine points for second place, down to one point for 10th place. Points earned in those two stages are then added to what drivers earn after the Final Stage, which sets the full race results.

Points are accumulated over each of the 36 races. There is a reset for the 16 drivers in the playoffs after the regular-season finale at Indianapolis, the series’ 26th race of the season. There are additional points resets in the postseason after the completion of each three-race postseason round.

Additionally, a driver can earn bonus playoff points for the following:

-Five playoff points to the race-winning driver
— One playoff bonus point to the driver who wins Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 in every event.

Those points are added on to a driver’s total once the postseason starts. The accumulated playoff points will carry over at the start of the Round of 16, Round of 12 and Round of 8.

Other key items to know:
• The driver who starts the race receives the points; a relief driver does not earn points.
• Bonus points are not awarded in the final race of the season to the Championship 4 drivers.

Below is a look at how a driver earns points based on finishing position at the end of the Final Stage.

Team Penske’s Joey Logano took the pole position for the 32nd race of the 36-race 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season, the Hollywood Casino 400, at Kansas Speedway. This race is the sixth of 10 races in the 2018 Cup Series playoffs, and it is the third and final race of the second of four rounds of the playoffs, the round of 12.

Logano took the pole position for the the 267-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Kansas Speedway oval in Kansas City, Kansas by recording a top lap time of 28.177 seconds (191.646 miles per hour) in his #22 Ford the third and final qualifying session for the race.

By taking this pole position, which is his first pole position of the season and the 20th of his Cup Series career for this race, Logano led a top five Ford sweep of the starting grid.

Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Kevin Harvick and Aric Almirola qualified in second and third place in their #4 Ford and #10 Ford, respectively, while Team Penske teammates Ryan Blaney and Brad Keselowski qualified in fourth and fifth in their #12 Ford and #2 Ford, respectively.

The next four drivers on the starting grid are all set to be Toyota drivers. Specifically, they are all set to be Joe Gibbs Racing drivers.

Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Erik Jones, Kyle Busch, Daniel Suarez and Denny Hamlin qualified for the race in sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth place in their #20 Toyota, #18 Toyota, #19 Toyota and #11 Toyota, respectively.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman, who was the only Chevrolet driver to get into the third and final qualifying session for the race and thus the only Chevrolet driver to qualify in the top 12, qualified in 10th place in his #88 Chevrolet.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kurt Busch and Furniture Row Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. are the other two drivers who made it into the third and final qualifying session for the race. They qualified in 11th and 12th place in their #41 Ford and #78 Toyota, respectively.

Of the drivers who qualified in the top 12 for this race, nine are drivers who are still eligible to win this season’s championship, as Jones, Suarez and Hamlin have been eliminated from championship contention. Of those nine drivers, only Almirola has clinched a berth in the round of 8, as he did so by winning this past Sunday’s round of 12 race at Talladega Superspeedway.

The three drivers who are still eligible to win this season’s championship but failed to qualify for this race in the top 12 are Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Clint Bowyer and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson. They qualified in 13th, 14th and 27th place in their #9 Chevrolet, #14 Ford and #42 Chevrolet, respectively.

Elliott is already locked into the third round of the playoffs, the round of 8, are a result of his victory in the opening round of 12 race at Dover International Speedway. Bowyer is currently above the round of 8 cut line while Larson is currently below it.

YES! lol,

I still think it is Harvick or Busch to lose, they do have the bonus points, but, I also think the paper clip will define the rest of the year for one driver,

Bowyer, dont underestimate that good ole boy at a short track, any the fords will be strong, along with the 18, Chase is a good story, but I honestly dont see him at Homestead, not this year, but one day soon,

I only wish Kenseth was round to take out Logano for good memories, LOL, he will be tough to beat,

Then you have Truex at Texas, Phoenix is a crap shoot, will be a very interesting 3 races before Homestead . . .

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AAA Texas 500 is a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stock car race held at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas. The inaugural race took place on November 6, 2005. The race has always started in the late afternoon, gone through sunset and twilight, and ended under the lights at night, much like the Coca Cola 600 in May, but it is not considered a night event. The race is held on the first weekend in November each year; TMS has expressed interest in changing the date, which is also the opening weekend of deer hunting season in Texas.

The race was acquired as a result of the Ferko lawsuit, which forced NASCAR to relinquish the sport's fourth major, the Mountain Dew Southern 500 and in the process end its Grand Slam, as the Southern 500 was one of the four races that made it up. This race has been derisively referred to as the Francis Ferko 500, mostly by traditionalist fans upset by the demise of the Southern 500.

The trophy is in the shape of cowboy boots. Traditionally, the winning driver wears a cowboy hat and fires a couple of six-shooters in the air on victory lane.[1]

This race is featured in the 2006 film Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, but it was actually shot at the identically shaped Charlotte Motor Speedway with the wall painted to look like Texas...!

Playoffs pulse: Stacking the field after Texas
By
Staff Report NASCAR.com November 4, 2018 at 6:55 pm

Following the eighth Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs race, here’s a brief look at the playoffs picture. The 10-race postseason is two races into the Round of 8. There is just one more race before the field is whittled to four, with four drivers eliminated from the postseason following Phoenix (Nov. 11).
Winner

Kevin Harvick earned his fourth career trip to the Championship 4 with a clean sweep at Texas Motor Speedway. The Stewart-Haas Racing veteran had the move of the race, too. On the final restart of a NASCAR Overtime finish, Harvick elected to start on the outside, hit the restart perfectly and powered clear of Ryan Blaney for his eighth win of the season.

MORE: Full race results | Updated standings
Who’s hot

Joey Logano. Forget whatever happened to Logano’s No. 22 Team Penske Ford as the temperatures got cooler. That he finished third one week after winning at Martinsville, on a day where several playoff contenders struggled, shows that this group is a serious threat to win the title. Logano isn’t making many friends by remaining as aggressive as ever on the track, but it’s helping his team round into championship form.

Kurt Busch. In a race in which it seemed nearly every playoff driver had issues, Kurt Busch enjoyed quite a smooth run. His seventh-place finish Sunday at Texas gives him a jolt heading into Phoenix. The only way his day could have been better is if Martin Truex Jr. had stayed a lap down after his pit-road penalty, because it would have significantly cut into the gap on the cutline. As it stands, though, Kurt looks like a threat to win at Phoenix.
Who’s not

Clint Bowyer. Bowyer’s in the “not” column for the second consecutive week, putting him in a must-win situation at Phoenix. Contact on Lap 1 with Denny Hamlin damaged Bowyer’s No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford and put him two laps back. While the team confirmed the right rear damage wasn’t fatal to the car, the driver lost an extra lap and couldn’t recover — especially after an over-the-wall penalty with four laps remaining in the second stage.

Kyle Busch. Busch appeared to holler out “oh boy” on the scanner in the middle of Stage 2. In fact, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver felt he had a loose wheel. The vibration got so bad he pitted out of cycle to get new tires as a precautionary measure, but it cost him two laps and any shot at the win, plus the ability to pad his lead entering the Round of 8 finale. Busch’s 17th-place finish is his worst of the year on a 1.5-mile track. ...!

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. will drive for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019, giving the longtime team owner a powerful four-car operation with multiple Monster Energy Series champions.
